Job Description

The Engineering Supervisor oversees the production of fiber optic designs and modifications by studying project objectives, researching and developing fiber optic engineering techniques and approaches, validating designs, and supporting project implementation. This position will teach and instruct on best practices and the most efficient layout, design and fiber optimization planning.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Evaluate, plan and design suggested fiber optic telecom routes to maximize the efficiency of the network while taking into account material, make ready, and method of placement cost to maximize efficient and effective utilization of fiber networks 

  • Interpret existing fiber routes with proposed routes to ensure that estimated traffic and demand would be achievable for both current and proposed routes 

  • Oversee and Supervise the drafting of new and revised  aerial and underground proposed fiber plant facilities based on field and design information provided 

  • Render detailed drawings where required of MDU schematics, trenching details, road/bridge crossings, and design schematics 

  • Complete and manage required customer permitting 

  • Utilize best practice for network optimization of planned facilities along with planning to meet 
future demand 

  • Perform quality control on drafting from contractors and in-house resources to ensure best 
practices are being adopted 

  • Establish and maintain effective communications and professional working relationships with both internal and external customers in order to collaborate on and troubleshoot any open issues 

  • Plan and schedule projects with in-house Engineers and Drafters to maximize efficiencies and meet deadlines and project commitments.
  • Other duties as assigned

Job Requirements


  • Associated Degree plus 1-3 years’ experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience


  • Ability to read and interpret utility engineering drawings and plans 

  • Advanced understanding of copper, fiber and/or CATV design standards and requirements 

  • Knowledge of fiber network design

Technical Skills:

  • Advanced CAD skillset 

  • Computer and Microsoft Office proficiency, including use of graphics, word processing, and 
electronic spreadsheet applications 

Soft Skills:

  • Ability to multi-task and work in a fast paced environment
  • Strong organizational, interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills
  • Highly organized and detail orientated
  • Knowledge of basic supervisory and employee management principles.

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to pass pre-employment screening that includes background and drug testing
  • Individuals must have a valid driver’s license and driving record meeting the company policy conditions
  • Working on a computer for 6-8 hours a day
  • Sitting at a desk for 6-8 hours a day
